February 22, 2019 Meeting
February is Heart Health month, and we were honoured to have Wendy Wray from the McGill University Hospital speak to us about Women's Heart Health. Women are often misdiagnosed by their physicians or health care providers which could lead to complications or even death if not properly treated. Ms Wray educated us on the symptoms to look for when experiencing angina or heart attacks, and stroke. Exercise, a healthy diet and taking care of oneself is the key to a long and healthy life.

It was a beautiful evening to barbecue in the backyard and enjoy each other's company at Homecoming 2018. Valerie Delacretaz and her daughter-in-law, Helen, hosted the party. Each student brought in a dish native to their nationality and shared it with other students in their class. The recipes have been collated into a recipe book which we hope Betty will share with us.
Betty teaches at Coronation School, where Beverly Townsend was previously a principal. Beverly urged Betty to apply for the grant, and it became a huge success at the school. Here are some photos of students with their parents who helped prepare and present the recipes with their children.

Gamefying Education: The Truly Engaging Classroom
by Tracy Woodward
Tracy Woodward presented an interesting and innovative way to make learning fun: turning research answers into keys to open locks to a box with treasures inside. This form of "gaming" is a new way to engage the student while making learning fun!
Tracy split us into four groups. Each group had a set of clues, consisting of clever questions that made us research the answers. Each answer brought us closer to solving the riddle which would open the locks on boxes with treasures inside. Every group solved the problems, opened the locks, and "BROKE OUT"! The treasure: samples of Arbonne products.

Georgie Crawford and Anne Marie G. Laurin visited Rose Szasz for her birthday. We celebrated with birthday cake and tea. The visit was very pleasant, but much too short. February 15 Meeting: Montreal 1909
Our meeting began with Barb Angus, our President, who brought us up to date in our business portion of the meeting. We were honoured to have with us Joan Wolfe, Area Representative for Canada, who brought us tidings from DKG International and news from across Canada. Joan encouraged members to attend the DKG International conference in Austin, Texas in July.
We initiated two new members, Esty Feldman and Iris Irdale, now two proud members of DKG Quebec.
After a scrumptious dinner prepared by our food committee, led by Valerie Delacretaz, (with Phyllis Bennett, Canjita Gomes-Fernandes, Magda Grzechowiak, Yocheved Sonenberg, Tracy Woodward and Erika Sebaldt) we went to the Laurence Patterson room where our guest speaker, Bob Wilkens, spoke about Montreal in the early 20th century, and his book "Local History: Montréal 1909".
We also heard from the Genealogy Ensemble who spoke about the formation of their writing group and how their family stories culminated into a book, "Beads in a Necklace".
The two presentations complemented each other, served to educated us in our history, and gave us a penchant for discovering our own family stories.

FAREWELL TO OUR DEAR SISTER, SARAH PALTIEL
McGill University flew its flag at half-mast in honour of Sarah Paltiel's passing
(Sarah Paltiel, C.M., M.Ed., LL.D.
Above all else, Sarah was a teacher. Her multifaceted career as an educator spanned six decades and touched countless lives. She was guided by a firm belief that all students can achieve excellence, provided that their teacher does them the credit of believing that they are capable of it and has the pedagogical skill to point them toward mastery. From 1943 to 1974, she was employed by the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, where she served as a classroom teacher for every grade, as a music specialist, as a French supervisor, and as a school vice-principal and principal.
She was Academic Dean of Vanier College (1974 to 1979), Director General of the Association of Jewish Day Schools of Montreal (1979-1981), and Director General of Dawson College (1981-1985). Sarah’s notable achievements include: her pioneering work from 1962-1966 as an on-camera teacher and script writer for the Quebec French School Telecasts; her successful negotiation, in 1982, of Dawson College’s purchase of the Mother House of the Congrégation de Notre Dame; and her role as Vice President of La Corporation des Célébrations du 350ième Anniversaire de Montréal, the committee that planned the city’s 350th birthday festivities. In 1970, she was appointed to the Board of Governors of McGill University, becoming the first woman ever to be appointed to its Executive Committee (1974) and the first woman ever to be named a Governor Emeritus (1987).
In 1992, McGill University awarded her an Honorary Doctorate of Laws. Sarah was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1996. Sarah was a prize-winning scholar, esteemed teacher, masterful administrator, self-taught pianist, lover of words, consumer of cookbooks (she could not cook), and hilarious raconteur. She was a kind, decent, and honest person who took an interest in everyone. She was brilliant, enthusiastic, funny, and warm. Always in good spirits, Sarah had the gift of being happy, and that’s how we will remember her.
